Dr. Roten was born in Marietta, Georgia and grew up in Ripley, Mississippi near his current practices in New Albany, Mississippi.  He attended Northeast Community College and the University of Mississippi for undergraduate training where he was accepted into the Air Force Health Profession Scholarship Program for his medical training.  Medical school and general surgery residency were completed in Jackson, Mississippi at the University of Mississippi Medical Center.

After residency, Dr. Roten was stationed near Omaha, Nebraska at Offutt Air Force Base from 2003-2007, and served as the coordinator and instructor for the surgical rotation with the Family Medicine residency through the University of Nebraska.  During that time, he also served as an adjunct instructor and trauma attending for the surgical residency at Creighton University. While Dr. Roten was with the Air Force, he was deployed to Manas Air Base, Kyrgyzstan and to Bagram Air Base, Afghanistan in 2005 in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.  He was honorably discharged in 2007 having attained the rank of Major.

From 2007-2014, he pursued his dream of living in the mountain west when he moved to Great Falls, Montana and worked in a multispecialty clinic and the local 220 bed hospital there in a busy surgical practice.  Dr. Roten had also dreamed of serving in foreign Christian mission work and was blessed by completing many short-term Christian mission trips to Latin America, Haiti, and Africa with different organizations.  While in Montana, Dr. Roten and his wife learned that one of their four sons had a seizure disorder and autism, spurring them to move back to Mississippi to be closer to their family.

From 2015 to the present, Dr. Roten and his family have been happily close to their extended family in a very rewarding rural practice, New Albany Surgical Associates.  He practices a wide range of general surgery including a moderate amount of endoscopy, gastroenterology, dermatology, and critical care.  He is the Chief of Surgery and Surgical Quality for Baptist Memorial Hospital-Union County.

Dr. Roten’s supportive and wonderful wife, Ashley, have four sons, Trey, John, Sam, and William, who range in age from 10 to 17.  Dr. Roten has been a member of the Christian Medical Dental Association since medical school and is a deacon at First Baptist Church, Ripley, Mississippi.  He enjoys shooting, hunting, knife making, leatherwork, cooking, fishing, hiking, backpacking, guitar playing, working on his land, gardening, reading, and road trips with his family.
